Nestled in a valley on the east side of the rugged Cascades, surrounded by the vast Wenatchee National Forest, lies the picturesque town of Leavenworth. A popular tourist destination among Washingtonians, the town is modeled in the Bavarian style of southeastern Germany. Around two and a half hours by car from the Tri-Cities, it is an excellent candidate for an overnight trip to take alone, with a friend, or with family. Home to a multitude of unique trinket shops, bakeries, toy stores, outfitters, wine cellars, and candy makers, as well as frequent festivals, celebrations, and entertainment events during all four seasons, there is something for everyone in Leavenworth.

Among the most popular events in the town are the annual Oktoberfest — three consecutive weekends in October packed with some of the best German music, food, and beer outside of the Heimat (homeland), and the Christmas Lighting Festival some two months later. The Oktoberfest celebration is one of the largest of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, and offers many family-friendly events such as live music, arts and crafts, and polka dancing. The atmosphere of the town at this time of year is stunning, with people coming from all around the country to join in celebration. The jovial spirit and feeling of camaraderie are palpable, and you’re bound to leave town having made one or two new friends. Just make sure to bring a few extra layers, as Leavenworth is starting to cool down this time of year.

Rivaling Oktoberfest in popularity is the Christmas Lighting Festival. Drawing massive crowds for three weekends in December, the city glows spectacularly in the night with a dazzling array of multicolored lights which cover the entirety of the town center. There are live music events, carolers filling the streets with music, roasted chestnut stands, local art shows, sledding in the parks, and heated outdoor seating for bars and restaurants. Taking a stroll down Front Street at this time can be a truly magical experience, the smell of hot chocolate and baked goods drifting into the cold winter air. The sounds of children playing as the crowds stop in each of the little shops that line the walkway. It’s worth it to grab a comfortable seat somewhere with a view and watch the town breathe with the energy of Christmas. Why not try a taste of the traditional Gluhwein (hot, cinnamon-spiced red wine) as you relax? It is a tasty treat famous in the Christmas Markets of Germany during the holiday season, and is sure to complete the experience.

In addition to these two festivals, the town is also home to an annual Valentine’s Weekend Festival in February, Alefest in April, the Spring Bird Fest in May, a Wine Walk in June, Summer Theater in July, a Salmon Festival in September, and a number of other events throughout the year. There is always something going on for people of all ages to enjoy! If you are interested, the full schedule of events can be found on the city calendar at https://leavenworth.org/calendar/. Hotels in the area tend to book up quickly during these events, so make plans as far ahead as possible.
